of Him Who praises Him,’ when he lifted his head from prostration, when he prostrated, when he rose, and when he stood up after the two rakahs—until he finished the prayer. It was then said to him, ‘People are disputing about how you prayed!’ He came out, stood on the pulpit, and declared: ‘O people, by Allah, I do not care whether your prayers differ or not; this is exactly how I saw the Messenger of Allah pray.’ This wording is al-Hakim’s, who judged the report ‘sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, although they did not record it in this form’; al-Dhahabi endorsed his verdict, and it is as they both said.
Al-Bukhari also transmitted the hadith (2/242) through this same chain in abridged form, while al-Ismaili recorded it in full, as cited in Fath al-Bari.
The report proves that it is recommended for the imam to raise his voice in the takbir so the congregation can follow his movements. If his voice is weak because of illness or any other reason, the sunnah is for the muadhdhin, or another member of the congregation, to pronounce the takbir loudly enough for the people to hear—just as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq used to do in the Prophet’s presence, as mentioned in the main text. On this point there is no scholarly disagreement, as al-Nawawi notes in al-Majmu (3/398), and further discussion will come.
Relaying the takbir behind the imam when there is no need—as many people do nowadays in Ramadan, even in small mosques—is not prescribed by unanimous agreement of the scholars. This consensus is reported by the scholar most familiar with their positions, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, in his Fatawa (1/69–70, 107). Bilal never relayed the takbir behind the Prophet, nor did anyone else behind the Rightly Guided Caliphs. For that reason many scholars deem the practice disliked, and some hold that the prayer of the one who does it is invalid; this is stated in the schools of Malik, Ahmad, and others.
If the person who relays the takbir fails to pause with composure—as many of them do—his prayer is invalid according to the majority of scholars, as the Sunnah indicates; proof of this will be given in its proper place. Likewise, if he
