Ibn Majah records it (1/268): ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi narrated to us; Abu Usamah narrated to us; ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja‘far narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Ata’ narrated it … . The chain is sound and uninterrupted.
Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban also include it in their Sahih collections, as noted in Talkhis al-Habir and Fath al-Bari (2/266).
Third hadith: Wasi‘ ibn Habban asked ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar about the Prophet’s prayer. He replied: “Allahu akbar” whenever he went down, and “Allahu akbar” whenever he rose … . The full text will be cited under the section on the salam.
Al-Nasa’i (1/194), Ahmad (2/152) and al-Bayhaqi (2/178) transmit it through Ibn Jurayj, from ‘Amr ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban, from Wasi‘. This chain is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim, and al-Hafiz offers no critical remark.
Fourth hadith: From ‘Ali: when the Prophet stood for prayer he would say, “Allahu akbar; wajjahtu wajhi lilladhi fatara al-samawat … ” and so on.
Al-Bazzar relates it in his Musnad: Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Malik al-Qurashi told us; Yusuf ibn Abi Salamah al-Majishun told us; his father told us, from al-A‘raj, from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Rafi‘, from ‘Ali.
Al-Bazzar declared the chain sound, and so did Ibn al-Qattan, who commented: “The explicit specification of the phrase ‘Allahu akbar’ here is exceedingly rare, almost unknown in the hadith literature …”
