[A Woman Should Pray Wearing a Khimar]

He ﷺ said:

“Allah does not accept the prayer of a post-pubescent woman unless she is wearing a khimar (head-covering).” (1)

(1) Reported by Abu Dawud (1:104); al-Tirmidhi (2:215); Ibn Majah (1:224); al-Hakim (1:251); al-Bayhaqi (2:233); Ibn Hazm in al-Muhalla (3:219); and Ahmad (6:150, 218, 259). All of them transmit through Hammad ibn Salamah, except Ibn Hazm, who cites Hammad ibn Zayd; both relate from Qatadah, from Ibn Sirin, from Safiyyah bint al-Harith, from Aishah with a marfuʿ isnad. Al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan," while al-Hakim declared it “sahih according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabi concurred; this judgment is sound. It is also found in the Sahih collections of Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban, and in the Musnad of Ishaq ibn Rahuyah, as noted in Nasb al-Rayah (1:295). Al-Tayalisi likewise attributed it to his Musnad, though I have not located it there—Allah knows best. Some have objected that the hadith is also transmitted through several chains from Ibn Sirin directly from Aishah—such as Ahmad (6:96, 238)—rendering it munqatiʿ, and through al-Hasan, who related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said …, as reported by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi; this version is mursal. Yet these routes do not undermine the narration, for when a reliable transmitter provides a connected chain that carries an additional wording, that addition must be accepted. The hadith is further supported by the report of Abu Qatadah: “Allah does not accept the prayer of a woman until she conceals her adornment, nor of a girl who has reached menarche until she dons the khimar.”
