(1) He is Salama b. al-Akwaʿ. The report is transmitted from him by Abu Dawud (1/102), al-Tahawi (1/222), al-Hakim (1/250) and al-Bayhaqi (2/240) through the chain of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muhammad al-Darawardi, who said: “Musa b. Ibrahim narrated to us from him.” ʿAttaf b. Khalid al-Makhzumi also followed this route from Musa; al-Nasaʾi (1/124) and Ahmad (4/49) record it, and in one of Ahmad’s versions Musa declares that he heard it directly from Salama. Al-Bukhari cites it as well in his Taʾrikh, and al-Hakim’s wording likewise makes this explicit. Ibn Khuzayma and Ibn Hibban include it in their respective Sahih collections, as noted in Fath and Tahdhib. Al-Shafiʿi reproduces it in al-Umm (1/78) through both lines, saying: “ʿAttaf b. Khalid and ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muhammad al-Darawardi informed us, from Musa b. Ibrahim b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Rabiʿa … .” As stated in al-Majmuʿ (3/4, 110), this isnad is hasan (sound). Concerning Musa, Ibn al-Madini deemed him “of average reliability,” Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy, and al-Hakim ruled the hadith sahih, a verdict with which al-Dhahabi concurred. (2) Hunting is mentioned because a hunter needs to travel light, free of anything that might slow him while pursuing the game. This point was made by Ibn al-Athir in his commentary on the Musnad (i.e., Musnad al-Shafiʿi), as cited in Nayl (2/61).
