Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

he concluded: “Do all of you have two garments?!” It is related by Abu Dawud, al-Tahawi (1/222), al-Bayhaqi (2/240) and Ahmad (4/22) through the chain: Mulazam ibn Amr al-Hanafi → ‘Abd Allah ibn Badr → Qays ibn Talq → his father. The wording quoted belongs to al-Bayhaqi, and the isnad is sound. Muhammad ibn Jabir ibn Yasar ibn Talq al-Hanafi also narrated it in abridged form from ‘Abd Allah; Ahmad (4/23) records this supporting route. Ahmad and al-Tahawi transmit yet another path: Aban ibn Yazid → Yahya ibn Abi Kathir → ‘Isa—al-Tahawi has “Uthman”, a copyist’s slip—ibn Khathim → Qays ibn Talq, who said: “My father was present with the Messenger of Allah when a man asked about praying in a single garment. The Prophet gave no reply; but when the iqama was called he joined his two garments together and led the prayer in them.” This chain is hasan: all its transmitters are reliable and well-known, with the exception of ‘Isa ibn Khathim—al-Hanafi al-Yamami—whom Ibn Hibban declared trustworthy, and from whom several narrators other than Yahya ibn Abi Kathir have reported. Ayub ibn Utbah likewise corroborated it from Qays; al-Tayalisi relates this version. Al-Bukhari, al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi add—in Muhammad ibn Sirin’s narration—that a man later questioned ‘Umar on the same issue. Al-Daraqutni reports: “During the caliphate of ‘Umar a man asked, ‘Commander of the Faithful, may a person pray in a single garment?’ He replied, ‘When Allah has given you plenty, then broaden your dress. A man may gather his clothes and pray: in an izar (waist-wrapper) and a rida (upper cloak); in an izar and a qamis (tunic); in an izar and a qaba (outer robe); in sirwal (trousers) and a rida; in sirwal and a qamis; in sirwal—and I think he also said—in a tubban (short drawers) and a qaba, in a tubban and a qamis, or in a tubban and a rida.’”
