(1) This report is from Abu Hurayrah and is transmitted through three principal lines: First line: Recorded by Malik (1/128) and, through him, by Muhammad in his Muwatta (p. 113); also by al-Bukhari (1/374), Muslim (2/61), Abu Dawud (1/102), al-Nasai (1/124), al-Tahawi (1/221), and al-Bayhaqi (2/237). All of them narrate it from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Said ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah. Ibn Majah (1/334) and Ahmad (2/278) likewise transmit it through Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri. Second line: Reported by al-Bukhari (1/378), Muslim, al-Darimi (1/318), al-Tahawi, al-Darqutni (p. 105), al-Bayhaqi (2/236), al-Tayalisi (no. 326), Ahmad (2/230, 495, 498, 499), and al-Tabarani in al-Saghir (pp. 28, 231) through numerous chains from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah. Third line: Reported by Muslim, al-Tahawi, and Ahmad (2/265, 285, 345) through al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah; the same isnad is reinforced by Muhammad ibn Amr, from Abu Salamah, as recorded by al-Tahawi and Ahmad (2/501). Corroborating narration: Talq ibn Ali said, “We went as a delegation to the Messenger of Allah, pledged allegiance to him, and prayed with him. A man then asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what is your ruling on praying in a single garment?’ The Prophet loosened his izar (lower wrap), draped his cloak over his shoulders, wrapped himself in both, and led us in prayer.
