In the two other versions it is stated explicitly that the Prophet said this to him after the prayer had finished.
Second chain: Hatim ibn Ismail – Yaqub ibn Mujahid Abu Hazrah – Ubadah ibn al-Walid ibn Ubadah ibn al-Samit, who said: We came to Jabir ibn Abd Allah in his mosque while he was praying … and he narrated the same incident. The wording that is traced back to the Prophet reads: “If the garment is wide, cross its two ends; if it is narrow, tie it around your haqw (waist and private parts).” Muslim included it within Jabir’s long hadith (8/231–234); so did Abu Dawud (1/103), al-Bayhaqi (2/239), and al-Hakim (1/254), who remarked: “Sound according to Muslim’s criteria, though he and al-Bukhari did not cite it.” Al-Dhahabi concurred, but his remark is mistaken because Muslim did in fact record it.
Third chain: from Shurahbil ibn Saad, who entered upon Jabir while he was praying … with a similar wording. Shurahbil is reliable but suffered confusion toward the end of his life, as Ibn Hajar notes in al-Taqrib; the remaining transmitters in Ahmad’s isnad are those accepted by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
A fourth chain, in abridged form, comes from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu’l-Zubayr said: Jabir said that the Messenger of Allah said, “Whoever prays in a single garment should gather it around himself.” Its transmitters meet Muslim’s conditions, but both Ibn Jurayj and his teacher Abu’l-Zubayr practiced tadlis and did not state that they heard it directly.
This hadith clearly distinguishes between a loose and a tight garment. With the former one must wrap it around the body, as the wording commands; with the latter it is permissible to use it only as a waist-wrapper, without any reprehensibility. This is the view of Ahmad and other early scholars, and it is the correct position, God willing, as was explained above.
