“When any one of you prays wearing a single garment, let him drape its two ends so that they cross over his shoulders.” (1)
In another wording:
“None of you should pray in a single garment if nothing of it covers his shoulders.” (2)
This chain, too, is sound according to Muslim’s conditions. In Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/49) al-Haythami attributes it solely to al-Bazzar and comments, “Its transmitters are those of the Sahih,” overlooking the fact that it is also found in Musnad Ahmad. Al-Tayalisi likewise records it (no. 285), though he is unsure whether the report is from Anas or from al-Hasan.
(1) It is transmitted by al-Bukhari (1/375), Abu Dawud (1/102), al-Bayhaqi (2/238), and Ahmad (2/255, 427) through several chains from Yahya b. Abi Kathir, from ʿIkrima, from Abu Hurayra, as a marfuʿ report. The wording cited here is Ahmad’s; an additional phrase occurs with all of them except Bukhari, and is likewise found in the Mustakhraj works of al-Ismaʿili and Abu Nuʿaym, as noted in Fath al-Bari.
A second route is given by al-Tahawi (1/223) through ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAyash, from Ibn Hurmuz, from the same Companion, marfuʿ.
The alternate wording is reported by al-Bukhari (1/374–375), Muslim (2/61), Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi (1/125), al-Darimi (1/318), al-Tahawi, and al-Bayhaqi via Abu al-Zinad, from al-Aʿraj, from him, marfuʿ; al-Darimi and al-Bayhaqi’s text reads with the emphatic nun: “la yusalliyanna.”
Al-Shafiʿi also cites it in al-Umm (1/77) through Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, and al-Daraqutni relates it in Gharaʾib Malik through ʿAbd al-Wahhab b. ʿAta, as recorded in Fath al-Bari.
(2) Al-Khattabi explains: “The intent is that he should not fasten the cloth around his waist and tie its two ends upon his hips; rather, after girding himself he should raise the two ends, cross them, and secure them over his shoulder so that they serve the roles of an izar (lower wrap) and a rida (upper wrap).” The Shaykh
