and: “The last prayer he offered he wore a qitri garment (1), draped around himself,” (2). He also said:
(1) A qitri cloak (thawb qitri) is a variety of striped mantle (burd) tinged with red and bearing somewhat coarse bands. Others say the term refers to fine garments imported from the region of Bahrain. Al-Azhari notes that in the outskirts of Bahrain there is a village called Qatar; he holds that qitri cloth is named after it, hence the qaf is pronounced with a kasra as a nisba and the form is lightened. This is the explanation given in Ibn al-Athir’s al-Nihaya. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, quoted by al-Qari in his Sharh al-Shamaʾil, adds that it denotes garments woven from thick cotton and similar fabrics.
(2) The report comes from Anas: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed behind Abu Bakr wearing a single garment—a burd—crossing its two ends; it was the last prayer he performed.” At-Tahawi records it with a sound chain through Humaid, from Thabit, from Anas; it is also transmitted by al-Tirmidhi and others, and has already been cited above in the section on his ﷺ praying seated (pp. 83–84). Al-Tirmidhi in al-Shamaʾil (1/136–138) and Ahmad (3/262) narrate—through two routes from Hammad b. Salama, via Habib b. al-Shahid, from al-Hasan, from Anas b. Malik—that “The Prophet ﷺ came out leaning on Usama b. Zayd, draped in a qitri cloak, and led them in prayer”; this isnad meets Muslim’s criterion. Ahmad further relates it (3/257, 281) from Affan—Hammad b. Salama—Humaid—on the authority of al-Hasan and, as Hammad thought, Anas: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out leaning on Usama b. Zayd, wrapped in a cotton garment whose two ends he had crossed, and led the people in prayer.”

وهذا إسناد على شرط مسلم.
