(5) Abd al-Rahman ibn Kaysan relates from his father: “I saw the Prophet pray the Zuhr (noon) and ‘Asr (afternoon) prayers wearing a single garment, mutalabbiban—i.e., wrapped tightly around his chest.” Reported by Ibn Majah and by Ahmad (3/417). Its chain can reasonably be judged hasan, and al-Busiri explicitly graded it so in his Zawaid. Similar reports exist from several other Companions; al-Haythami gathers them in Majma‘ al-zawaid (2/48–51) for those who wish to consult them. Another narration from Anas will follow immediately after this. Note that iltihaf and tawashshuh are synonymous: crossing the two ends of the cloth over both shoulders—what al-Bukhari, citing al-Zuhri, calls ishtimal over the shoulders; al-Nawawi gives the same explanation in his Sharh Muslim. A mutalabbib with a garment is someone who bunches it at his chest; the Arabs say talabbaba bi-thawbihi when he does so. Al-Nawawi comments: “These hadiths prove the permissibility of praying in a single garment, and there is no disagreement on the matter except for a report ascribed to Ibn Mas‘ud, whose authenticity I do not know.” I say: He is apparently referring to Ibn Abi Shaybah’s report from Ibn Mas‘ud: “Never pray in only one garment, even if it were as wide as what lies between heaven and earth.” Ibn Hajar leaves this unremarked in Fath al-bari. Ibn Mas‘ud’s statement is most likely meant for the case in which a second garment is available, as indicated by his other narration transmitted by ‘Abd Allah ibn Ahmad in the Zawaid (5/141) through two chains from Abu Mas‘ud.
