become mutawatir, that is, recurrent through multiple independent lines conveying the same purport. Here are some—indeed, many—of those narrations:
(1) From ʿUmar ibn Abi Salama: “I saw the Messenger of Allah praying in a single garment, wrapped in it, in the house of Umm Salama, placing its two ends on his shoulders.”
Recorded by al-Bukhari (1/373); Muslim (2/61–62); Malik (1/158); Abu Dawud (1/102); al-Nasaʾi (1/124); al-Tirmidhi (2/166), who declared it sahih; Ibn Majah (1/324); al-Tahawi (1/222); al-Bayhaqi (2/237); and Ahmad (4/26, 27)—all through the route of Hisham ibn ʿUrwa from his father.
Except for Abu Dawud, a variant of Muslim, of al-Tahawi, and of Ahmad: they transmit it from Abu Umama ibn Sahl, both narrating from him (i.e., from ʿUrwa).
Al-Bukhari and others preserve ʿUrwa’s wording. Another wording has “mutawashshihan (draped)” instead of “mushtamilan (wrapped).” Abu Umama says: “multahifan, crossing its two ends.”
(2) From Umm Haniʾ: that the Messenger of Allah prayed in her house, in the year of the Conquest, eight rakʿahs in a single garment in which he had crossed its two ends.
Recorded by Malik (1/166)—and from him by al-Bukhari (1/373; 6/209; 10/454); Muslim (1/182–183; 2/158); Muhammad in his Muwattaʾ (p. 116); al-Nasaʾi (1/46); al-Tahawi (1/222); and Ahmad (6/343)—all through Malik, from Abu l-Nadr, the client of ʿUmar ibn ʿUbayd Allah, that Abu Murrah, the client of ʿAqil ibn Abi Talib, informed him that he heard Umm Haniʾ relate it. The wording cited is that of Muslim.
