Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and at times he would pray in a Hadrami burd (cloak), draping it around himself with nothing else on (1). He also prayed in a single garment, crossing its two ends and laying them over his shoulders (2) (3).

Ibn Thawban narrated: Hasan ibn Atiyya told us, from Abu Munib al-Jurashi, from Ibn Umar, in a marfuʿ report with the same wording. This chain is hasan (sound), as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar states in Fath al-Bari (10/222). His teacher, al-ʿIraqi, had already declared it sahih in Takhrij al-Ihya (1/242), and Ibn Hibban before them, as cited in Bulugh al-Maram (4/239; Subul al-Salam). I add: al-Tahawi also recorded it in Mushkil al-Athar (1/88) through the route of al-Walid ibn Muslim: al-Awzaʿi narrated to us, from Hasan ibn Atiyya, with the same chain. The isnad remains reliable provided al-Awzaʿi actually heard it from Hasan, for al-Walid ibn Muslim practised tadlis al-taswiyah, especially in his transmissions from al-Awzaʿi. Numerous additional hadiths forbid imitating the unbelievers; this is not the place to cite them all. For a comprehensive treatment see Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya, Iqtida al-Sirat al-Mustaqim Mukhalafat Ashab al-Jahim, the finest work we have found on the topic. (1) Musnad Ahmad (1/265) and al-Tahawi. (2) Al-Baji comments: “He drew one end of his cloak under his right arm and placed it on his left shoulder, then drew the other end under his left arm and placed it on his right shoulder. This form of wrapping in a single garment is called al-tawshih, also al-idtibaʿ. It is permissible in prayer and elsewhere because he can uncover his arm for prostration and the like without exposing his ʿawra.” Thus in Tanwir al-Hawalik. (3) The same practice has reached us through many chains from several Companions, such that it has
