Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and at other times he would be “in a Syrian cloak with narrow sleeves” (1), to the extent that “when he wished to perform ablution, he tried to draw his hand out through the sleeve so he could wash, but it was too tight, so he brought his hand out from underneath the cloak instead” (2). Beneath the cloak he had on either a shirt (qamīs) or an izār (waist-wrapper).

(1) Ibn al-Qayyim states in Zad al-Maʿad (1/49): “As for these long, wide sleeves that look like sacks, neither the Prophet nor any of his Companions ever wore them at all. They run contrary to his Sunnah, and their permissibility is doubtful, for they belong to the realm of khuyalaʾ (vain ostentation).” Al-Shawkani remarks (2/90): “In our times the people most noted for violating this Sunnah are, regrettably, the scholars: one sees a scholar whose shirt sleeves are each large enough to serve as a cloak or a child’s garment for one of his sons or for an orphan. Such sleeves bring no worldly benefit—only frivolity, added encumbrance, restriction of the hand’s usefulness in many tasks, quick tearing, and an unsightly appearance—and no religious benefit except contravening the Sunnah, trailing one’s garment, and indulging in arrogance.” (2) Reported by al-Bukhari 1/377; Muslim 1/158; Malik 1/57; Abu Dawud 1/24; al-Nasai 1/31, 5/26, 32; al-Bayhaqi 2/412; and Ahmad 4/247, 250, 251, through various chains from al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba: “The Messenger of Allah went out to relieve himself; when he returned I met him with the water vessel. I poured water over him: he washed his hands, then his face. When he tried to wash his forearms the gown was too tight, so he brought his arms out from beneath it, washed them, wiped his head, wiped over his leather socks (khuffayn), and then led us in prayer.” Muslim’s wording adds: “He was wearing a Syrian gown with narrow sleeves.” Another version says: “made of wool,” and Abu Dawud includes this addition, while
