“If one of you performs the prayer in a single garment, let him fasten it around his waist, and do not wrap yourselves in the Jewish fashion.” Its chain is sound.
Al-Tahawi also transmits it—with this wording—and so does Ahmad (2/148) through Ibn Jurayj, who said: “Nafiʿ informed me that Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them) once gave him a garment while he was still a boy. Nafiʿ then entered the mosque, and Ibn ʿUmar found him praying with the cloth merely draped over him. He asked, ‘Do you not have two garments?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘If I needed your help behind the house, would you put both of them on?’ He answered, ‘Yes.’ Ibn ʿUmar said, ‘Allah is more deserving that you adorn yourself for Him than other people are.’ Nafiʿ agreed: ‘Indeed, for Allah.’
“Nafiʿ then narrated—either from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) or from ʿUmar; Nafiʿ said, ‘I am certain it is from one of them, and I think it is only from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)’—that he said: ‘None of you should wrap himself in the prayer in the manner of the Jews.’ Ahmad adds: ‘Rather, let him throw (one edge over the shoulder).’ He continued: ‘Whoever possesses two garments should use one as an izar (lower wrap) and the other as a rida (upper cloak); whoever has only one garment should use it as an izar and then pray.’ ”
Ahmad (1/16) also records it through Ibn Ishaq—“Nafiʿ narrated it to us”—with a similar wording, but as a mawquf report ending with Ibn ʿUmar; in it Nafiʿ says: “If I told you that he attributed it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I would hope I would not be lying.” This chain is good.
In short, the hadith is authentic whether transmitted as marfuʿ (Prophetic) or mawquf (Companion), and there is no conflict between the two versions. The uncertainty found in some transmissions is removed by narrators who say, “My overwhelming impression is that he raised it,” and by others who state it decisively, as noted earlier. Tawbah al-Anbari, likewise, explicitly related it from Nafiʿ as a marfuʿ report, as mentioned a little above.
