“The prohibited ‘Jewish-style wrap’ (*ishtimal al-yahud*) is that a person drapes the garment over his whole body and lets it hang down, without throwing one edge over the shoulder.” (1) Al-Bayhaqi (2/235–236) records it with the chain Anas b. ‘Iyad → Musa b. ‘Uqbah → Nafi‘ → ‘Abd Allah—Nafi‘ holding that it goes back to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The isnad is sound by the standards of the Six Books, save for the hesitation about its being marfu‘. Al-Tahawi (p. 221) also transmits it through Hafs b. Maysarah → Musa b. ‘Uqbah → Nafi‘ → Ibn ‘Umar, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said …,” without any doubt about its marfu‘ status; this chain too is sahih according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Ayub corroborated it from Nafi‘. Abu Dawud (1/103) reports it—Sulayman b. Harb → Hammad b. Zayd—from him; the chain is likewise sahih on their standards, and al-Nawawi authenticated it (3/173). Al-Bayhaqi (p. 236) also relates it via Yusuf b. Ya‘qub al-Qadi → Sulayman b. Harb, though he expresses doubt about its marfu‘ status. He then narrates it through Abu al-Rabi‘ → Hammad b. Zayd, adding: “I am fairly sure he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said.” He further notes: “Al-Layth b. Sa‘d transmitted it from Nafi‘ with the same uncertainty.” Finally, he brings it through Sa‘id—namely, Ibn Abi ‘Arubah—→ Ayub as a marfu‘ report, without any doubt, in the wording:
