Attire in Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ would commence the prayer wearing whatever clothing was readily available; he did not set aside a garment specifically for it, except for the Friday Prayer—as will be mentioned later. At times he would “pray in a red suit” (1) (that is (2) two pieces: an izār and a ridāʾ), and he would encourage the use of these two garments, saying:
(1) As Abu Juhaifa related:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out wearing a red hulla (two-piece cloak) with his sleeves rolled up. He led the people in two rakʿas, using an ʿanaza (short spear) as a sutra, and I observed people and animals passing in front of the ʿanaza.”
This report is found in al-Bukhari (1/386; 10/210); Muslim (2/56); Abu Dawud (1/86); al-Nasaʾi (1/125) who entitled the chapter “Prayer in Red Garments”; al-Tirmidhi (1/375), who declared it sound; and Ahmad (4/308) through the chain of ʿAwn b. Abi Juhaifa from his father.
The hadith proves the permissibility of wearing red clothes, the position of the Shafiʿis and others, and it is the correct view, God willing. None of the narrations that forbid red garments is authentic. Interpreting the red hulla as merely a robe with red stripes—as Ibn al-Qayyim suggested in Zad (1/48, 172) and elsewhere—is forced, as al-Shawkani has shown. It is likewise established that the Prophet ﷺ saw al-Hasan and al-Husayn wearing two red shirts and did not object. This is not the place for a full discussion; for further detail see Nayl al-awtar (2/80–83) and my Taʿliqat al-jiyad.
(2) Taking hulla to mean a two-piece cloak is the majority view, as Ibn Hajar notes in Fath al-bari (10/213). Others say it refers to two garments worn one over the other. The ridaʾ is the cloth or mantle a person places over his shoulders and upper back above his regular clothes.
