Some Hanbali jurists state: “For a person to go to a grave and deliberately pray there seeking its blessing is outright defiance of Allah and His Messenger and an invention in the religion for which Allah has given no permission. The textual prohibition is unambiguous, and the scholarly consensus confirms it: among the gravest forbidden acts and the foremost causes of shirk (polytheism) are praying at graves, turning them into mosques, or constructing buildings over them. Any opinion that labels this merely ‘disliked’ refers to something else, for it is inconceivable that the scholars would condone an act whose doer the Prophet ﷺ repeatedly cursed. One must promptly demolish such sites and the domes erected over graves, for they are more harmful than Masjid al-Dirar; they were established in disobedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who forbade them and ordered the levelling of elevated graves. Every lamp or lantern placed on a grave must be removed, and any endowment or vow made for it is invalid.” End of the quotation from al-Zawajir. The remarks of al-Manawi and the Hanbali writer thus show that intending to pray toward or beside a grave is forbidden and represents legislation never sanctioned by Allah. Yet many people—even some shaykhs—visit the shrines (maqamat) of the awliya (saints) and the righteous to pray there and seek blessing. When reproved they say, “Actions are judged by intentions; our intentions are good and our beliefs sound!” Even if their claim is true, it will not spare them censure before the Lawgiver, for legal rulings are based on outward conduct, while Allah alone knows the inner realities. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once rebuked a man who said to him, “Whatever Allah wills and you will, O Messenger of Allah,” replying, “Have you made me a rival to Allah? Say: Whatever Allah alone wills.” The Prophet ﷺ knew that the man had no wish to make him a partner with Allah—indeed he had embraced faith precisely to flee from shirk—yet the Prophet repudiated the words he heard, so as to correct him once and for all lest he ever again utter something that hints at polytheism or misguidance.
