“The Prophet ﷺ was praying in the quarters of Umm Salama when ‘Abd Allah—or, Amr—the son of Abu Salama passed in front of him. He motioned with his hand and the boy turned back. Then Zaynab, the daughter of Umm Salama, passed by; he gestured likewise with his hand and she continued on. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer he said: ‘They (women) are the more persistent.’
Ibn Majah recorded it (1/302), as did Ahmad (6/294) and Ibn Abi Shaybah, through the chain of Usamah ibn Zayd → Muhammad ibn Qays → his mother → Umm Salama. Ibn Majah’s wording is “from his father, from her.” Al-Zawaid comments: “Its isnad is weak. Some copies read ‘from his mother’ instead of ‘from his father,’ and neither of them is known.”
Ibn al-Qattan also graded the hadith weak; Zayla‘i cites his judgment in Nasb al-Rayah (2/85).
The report therefore carries no weight. Even if it were sound it would still not prove the point at issue, as has been shown when discussing the last hadith of Ibn ‘Abbas. And if one concedes that the passing occurred between him and the sutrah, the answer remains, as al-Sindi states: “What breaks the prayer is the passage of a mature woman, for that is the default sense of the word ‘woman’; the wording ‘a menstruating woman,’ mentioned earlier, confirms this.”
They further cite the marfu‘ hadith of Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri: “Nothing cuts off the prayer; repel whatever you can, for it is only a shaytan.”
It was related by Abu Dawud (1/114), al-Darqutni (141), and al-Bayhaqi (2/278) through Abu Usamah → Mujalid → Abu al-Waddak → Abu Sa‘id.
