(2) —specifically, that Zayd ibn Khalid sent him to Abu Juhaym to ask: “What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the person who passes in front of someone praying?” Abu Juhaym replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said …,” and he related the hadith. Al-Tirmidhi comments: “This is a hadith hasan sahih, and the scholars act on it: they consider passing in front of a worshiper reprehensible, yet they do not hold that it invalidates the prayer.”
The report is supported by a marfuʿ narration from Abu Hurayrah that reads: “If one of you knew what liability he incurs by passing in front of his brother while obstructing him (one version adds: while he is conversing with his Lord), he would know that to stand for one hundred years would be better for him than the single step he has taken.” It is related by Ibn Majah, al-Tahawi, and Ahmad (2/371) through Ubayd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muhayb, from his uncle, from Abu Hurayrah.
This chain is weak. There is disagreement over Ubayd Allah: Ibn Maʿin deemed him reliable in one statement and weak in another, and al-Taqrib says he is “not strong.” His uncle—Ubayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhayb—is regarded as unknown (majhul) by al-Shafiʿi, Ahmad, and others; al-Taqrib grades him “acceptable” (maqbul). Ibn Hibban, according to his general practice, declared him trustworthy. Both he and his teacher Ibn Khuzaymah included the hadith in their Sahih collections, as noted in al-Targhib (1/194), and they pronounced Ibn Majah’s isnad sound, though you have seen the flaws it contains.
