Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

He—peace and blessings be upon him—also used to say:

"When any of you is praying toward something that screens him from the people, and someone wants to pass in front of him, let him push him back at his upper chest and repel him as much as he can (in another version: let him prevent him—twice). If he still refuses, then let him fight him (1), for he is nothing but a devil." (2)

(1) Al-Suyuti says in Tanwir al-Hawalik: “According to us it is to be taken in its literal sense, and the act it describes is recommended. Ibn al-Arabi comments that muqatala (fighting) here means simple repulsion. Al-Ismaili records the wording: ‘If he refuses, let him place his hand on his chest and push him away.’ The phrase ‘for he is only a shaytan’ may mean that his behaviour is satanic, or that he is a human shaytan. Al-Ismaili also has the variation: ‘for the shaytan is with him.’ ” I add: The report of Ibn Umar cited earlier corroborates this wording and supports the view that the shaytan is what prompts him to act in that manner. Allah knows best. (2) Reported by al-Bukhari (1/461–463; 6/259), Muslim (2/57–58), Abu Dawud (1/111), al-Nasai (1/123), al-Darimi (1/328) through Malik—and it is also in the Muwatta (1/170)—, al-Tahawi (1/266), Ibn Khuzaymah (1/94/1; 2/15; 16/817–818), al-Bayhaqi (2/267), and Ahmad (3/34, 43, 49, 57, 63, 93) via the chains of Abu Salih al-Samman and Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Sa id al-Khudri, both transmitting it from Abu Sa id with a marfu attribution. Muslim’s wording comes through Abu Salih, while the additional phrases are from Ibn Abi Sa id; the alternative recension is that of Ibn Khuzaymah. It also has a third chain in Abu Dawud and Ahmad (3/82–83) through Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri: Masarrah ibn Ma bad related to us, saying, “Abu Ubayd, the hajib (chamberlain) of Sulayman, narrated to me ….” *The manuscripts, following the Musnad, read sahib (‘companion’), but the correct word is hajib (‘gatekeeper, chamberlain’).*
