And on another occasion he was leading an obligatory prayer when he suddenly clasped his hand. After he finished, they asked, “O Messenger of Allah, has something new occurred in the prayer?” He replied, “No; it is only that Satan tried to pass in front of me, so I seized him by the throat until I felt the coolness of his tongue upon my hand. By Allah! Had my brother Solomon not forestalled me in this, he would have been tied to one of the pillars of the mosque so that the children of Medina could walk around him (1). This chain is sound according to Muslim’s criteria. Abu Dawud (1/113) and Ahmad (1/113, 291) also transmitted it through several routes from Shuʿbah, but without Suhayb al-Basri in the isnad.
A third route is supplied by Ibn Majah (1/304) and likewise by Ahmad (1/247): Yahya Abu al-Mualla al-Attar → al-Hasan al-Urani, who said: “When the question of what breaks the prayer was raised before Ibn ʿAbbas, they mentioned the dog, the donkey, and the woman. He asked, ‘What about a kid goat? The Messenger of Allah used to pray…,’” and he related a similar report.
All of its transmitters are reliable, yet the chain is broken between al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Urani and Ibn ʿAbbas, as Imam Ahmad and others have noted.
The additional wording comes from the hadith of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather; its isnad is hasan. Its full text and documentation will appear later, just before the discussion of rukuʿ, Allah willing.
(1) Al-Nawawi says in his Sharh Muslim: “This narration proves that the jinn exist and that some human beings may see them. The verse, ‘Indeed he and his tribe see you from where you do not see them’ (7:27), refers to what normally happens; were it….”
