(1) Reported by Imam Ahmad (1:138): Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us; Shuʿbah from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard Harithah ibn Mudarrib narrate from ʿAli, may Allah be pleased with him: “On the night of Badr I saw that none of us was awake except the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; he was praying toward a tree and supplicating until dawn.” The chain is authentic; all its transmitters are those of the two Shaykhs except Harithah ibn Mudarrib—with a doubled, kasra-marked rāʾ—who is reliable, as stated in al-Taqrib. Al-Fath (2:460) comments: “Al-Nasaʾi also recorded it with a sound chain.” I add: it is probably in al-Kubra of al-Nasaʾi. Ahmad further relates it (1:125) through ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi from Shuʿbah with the wording: “beneath a tree, praying and weeping until dawn.” The two versions do not conflict: whoever prays facing a tree is, in effect, praying beneath it.
