And whenever he did take them off, he would place them to his left. (1)
He also said: “When any one of you is engaged in prayer, he should not set his sandals down on his right, nor on his left where they would end up on someone else’s right—unless there is no one to his left; in that case, let him put them between his feet.” (2)
(1) Recorded by Abu Dawud (1/105); al-Nasai (125–126); Ibn Majah (437); Ibn Khuzaymah (1/110/2 = 2/106/1014–1015); al-Hakim (259)—and through him al-Bayhaqi (2/432)—and by Ahmad (3/410–411) from Ibn Jurayj, who said: “Muhammad b. ‘Abbad b. Ja‘far related to me from ‘Abd Allah b. Sufyan, from ‘Abd Allah b. al-Saib, who said: I saw the Prophet ﷺ praying on the Day of the Conquest”—al-Hakim adds: “the dawn prayer”—“and he placed his sandals to his left.”
Al-Hakim remarks, “I have cited it merely as a supporting report.”
I respond: This is unwarranted leniency, for such wording applies only to a hadith whose chain is defective, whereas the isnad here is sound and fulfils Muslim’s criteria. In fact, Muslim transmits—through this very chain—another narration of ‘Abd Allah b. al-Saib in his Sahih, to be mentioned below under “Recitation in Fajr.” Al-‘Iraqi (1/170) erred by attributing the present hadith to Muslim; what Muslim actually contains is the other narration just referred to.
(2) Reported by Ibn Khuzaymah (2/106/1016); Abu Dawud—whose wording is reproduced here—(105–106); al-Hakim (259); and, through the last two, al-Bayhaqi (2/432) from ‘Uthman b. ‘Umar, who said: “Salih b. Rustum Abu ‘Amir narrated to us from ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Qays, from Yusuf b. Mahak, from Abu Hurayrah,” in marfu‘ form. Al-Hakim declares it “sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi concurs.
I note: Al-Hakim’s chain omits ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Qays—Abu Salih al-Hanafi—who is reliable but appears only among Muslim’s narrators; accordingly, the hadith is sound solely by Muslim’s standard.

قلت: وهو تساهل منه؛ فان مثل هذه العبارة إنما تقال في حديث معلول إسناده،
وليس الأمر هنا كذلك؛ فإنه حديث صحيح الإسناد على شرط مسلم.
