You—You alone, with no partner— the Bestower of favors, O Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Lord of majesty and generosity, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer! I ask You for Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire.” The Prophet ﷺ then said to his Companions, “Do you know what he has just invoked?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, he has called upon Allah by His supreme Name (in another narration: His greatest Name); when He is invoked by it, He answers, and when He is asked by it, He gives.” Among the last supplications he ﷺ would say between the tashahhud and the taslīm was: 10. “O Allah, forgive me my earlier and my later sins, what I have hidden and what I have made public, my excesses, and whatever You know better about me than I do. You are the Advancer and You are the Delayer; there is no deity but You.” ⦗1002–1022⦘ al-Taslīm Then the Prophet ﷺ would give the salutation to his right, saying: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah,” until the whiteness of his right cheek could be seen, and to his left: “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah,” until the whiteness of his left cheek could be seen. Sometimes he added to the first salutation: “and His blessings.” When he said to his right, “Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah,” he would at times shorten the salutation on his left to: “Peace be upon you.” On occasion he would give a single salutation—“Peace be upon you”—facing forward yet inclining slightly (or: a little) toward the right side. The Companions used to gesture with their hands when giving salām to the right and to the left; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw them and said, “What is the matter with you, waving your hands as though they were the tails of skittish horses? When any one of you gives salām, let him turn toward his companion and not motion with his hand.” After they prayed with him again, they stopped doing that. (In another narration: “It suffices one of you to place his hand on his thigh, then give salām to his brother—on his right and on his left.”) ⦗1023–1036⦘ The obligation of the taslīm He ﷺ said, “…and its release—that is, the prayer—is the salām.” ⦗1037–1039⦘
