Rising for the Second Rak‘ah
Supporting oneself with the hands when standing up
Then “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stand up for the second rak‘ah leaning on the ground,” and “in the prayer he would ‘knead’—that is, he would push off with his hands when he rose.”
Whenever he ﷺ rose for the second rak‘ah he would begin the recitation with: “All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds,” and he would not pause. In this rak‘ah he did what he had done in the first, except that he made it shorter than the first, as mentioned earlier. ⦗824–827⦘
The obligation of reciting al-Fātiḥah in every rak‘ah
He instructed the man who prayed incorrectly to recite al-Fātiḥah in every rak‘ah; after ordering him to recite it in the first rak‘ah he said, “Then do that throughout your entire prayer” (in another wording: “in every rak‘ah”). He also said, “There is a recitation in every rak‘ah.” ⦗828⦘
The first tashahhud / the tashahhud sitting
Next the Prophet ﷺ would sit for the tashahhud after completing the second rak‘ah. If the prayer consisted of two rak‘ahs, such as Fajr, “he would sit in iftirāsh,” just as he sat between the two prostrations; he sat the same way in the first tashahhud of a three- or four-rak‘ah prayer. He likewise instructed the man who prayed incorrectly, saying, “When you sit in the middle of the prayer, be calm, spread out your left thigh, and then recite the tashahhud.”
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “My close friend ﷺ forbade me from iqʿāʾ like the sitting of a dog.” In another report: “He used to forbid the Devil’s perch.” And “whenever he sat for the tashahhud he placed his right palm on his right thigh (in another wording: on his knee) and his left palm on his left thigh (in another wording: on his knee), spreading it out upon it.” “The Prophet ﷺ would place the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh.”
He also “forbade a man who was sitting leaning on his left hand in the prayer,” saying, “That is the prayer posture of the Jews.” In another wording: “Do not sit like that; it is the sitting of those who are being punished.” In yet another report: “It is the sitting of those upon whom wrath has descended.” ⦗829–837⦘
Moving the finger during tashahhud
And “when he ﷺ sat [for the tashahhud] he placed his left palm on his left knee, spreading it out upon it, clenched all the fingers of his right hand, and pointed with the finger that follows the thumb [toward the qiblah,
