so-and-so! What keeps you from doing what your companions ask of you, and why do you insist on reciting this sūrah in every rakʿah?”
He replied, “I love it.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Your love for it has admitted you to Paradise.” (p. 391–401)
His ﷺ Practice of Combining Related and Other Sūrahs in a Single Rakʿah
He ﷺ would sometimes pair related sūrahs from the mufassal section. Thus, in one rakʿah he recited Sūrat al-Raḥmān (55:78) together with Sūrat al-Najm (53:62); Sūrat al-Qamar, which opens with “Iqtarabat” (54:55), with Sūrat al-Ḥāqqah (69:52); Sūrat al-Ṭūr (52:49) with Sūrat al-Dhāriyāt (51:60); Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah, which begins “Idhā waqaʿat” (56:96), with Sūrat Nūn/Al-Qalam (68:52); Sūrat al-Maʿārij, beginning “Saʾala sāʾilun” (70:44), with Sūrat al-Nāziʿāt (79:46); Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn (83:36) with Sūrat ʿAbasa (80:42); Sūrat al-Muddaththir (74:56) with Sūrat al-Muzzammil (73:20); Sūrat al-Insān, which starts “Hal atā” (76:31), with Sūrat al-Qiyāmah, “Lā uqsimu” (75:40); Sūrat al-Nabaʾ, “ʿAmma yatasāʾalūn” (78:40), with Sūrat al-Mursalāt (77:50); and Sūrat al-Dukhān (44:59) with Sūrat al-Takwīr, “Idhā sh-shamsu kuwwirat” (81:29).
At times he combined chapters from the seven long sūrahs—such as al-Baqarah, al-Nisāʾ, and Āl ʿImrān—in a single rakʿah of the night prayer, as will be mentioned later. He used to say, “The best prayer is that which involves lengthy standing.”
Whenever he recited, “Is He not able to give life to the dead?” (75:40), he would respond, “Glory be to You—indeed, He is!” And when he recited, “Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High” (87:1), he would say, “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” (p. 402–410)
Permissibility of Reciting Only Sūrat al-Fātiḥah
Muʿādh used to perform the late-evening prayer (ʿIshāʾ) with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then return and lead his own people. One night he came back and led them; among the congregation was a young man from his clan, the Banū Salamah, called Sulaym. When the prayer became overly long for him, the youth slipped away, prayed by himself in a corner of the mosque, then left, took hold of his camel’s halter, and departed.
When Muʿādh finished the prayer, he was told what the young man had done. He said, “That is sheer hypocrisy! I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of his action.” The youth replied, “And I will inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what he did!”
The next morning they both went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Muʿādh related what the youngster had done, and the youth said, “Messenger of Allah, he spends a long time praying with you, and then comes back and prolongs the prayer for us as well!”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Muʿādh, are you putting people to trial?!”
