While travelling he would offer the supererogatory prayers on his mount.
He also legislated for his community that in moments of extreme danger they may pray on foot—standing—or mounted, as mentioned earlier. Concerning this the Exalted said: “Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devout obedience. But if you fear (danger) then on foot or mounted; and when you are safe, remember Allah as He has taught you what you did not know” (al-Baqarah 2:238).
He ﷺ prayed seated during the illness that led to his death. He had likewise prayed seated on an earlier occasion when he was ailing and the people behind him were standing. He motioned for them to sit, so they did so; and when he finished he said, “You were just about to do what the Persians and Romans do: they stand before their kings while the latter remain seated. Do not do that. The imam has only been appointed to be followed: when he bows, bow; when he rises, rise; and if he prays seated, then all of you pray seated.” ⦗79–90⦘
Prayer of the Sick Person While Seated
ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I was suffering from haemorrhoids, so I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, ‘Pray standing; if you cannot, then seated; and if you cannot, then on your side.’” He also said, “I asked him ﷺ about a man who prays while seated. He replied, ‘Whoever prays standing—that is better; whoever prays seated receives half the reward of the one who stands; and whoever prays lying down (in another narration: reclining) receives half the reward of the one who is seated.’”
What is meant here is the sick person, for Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) related: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came upon some people who were praying seated because of illness and said, ‘The prayer of one who is seated is half the prayer of one who stands.’” He ﷺ once visited a sick man and found him praying on a cushion; he removed it and threw it aside. The man then picked up a stick to pray on, so he removed it too and cast it away, saying, “Pray on the ground if you are able; otherwise gesture with nods, making your prostration lower than your bowing.” ⦗91–100⦘
