Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

Rather, he only performed the Duha supererogatory prayer seated toward the end of his life, after old age had overtaken him—that was one year before his passing (1). And “he would sit cross-legged” (2).

and this is the correct view, the same conclusion reached by Ahmad and Ishaq. Al-Tirmidhi (2/212), after citing the two reports, wrote: “Ahmad and Ishaq said: both hadiths are to be acted upon, as though they considered each of them authentic and operative.” Ibn Hajar’s citation of some Hanafis to the contrary is offset by al-Tahawi, who relates from the three Imams that preference should be given to her first report rather than to the narration of Ibn Shuqayq. (1) Reported by Muslim and Ahmad; its full documentation appeared earlier under “Standing” (p. 79). (2) Related by al-Nasa’i (1/245); through him by al-Darqutni (152), al-Hakim (1/275), al-Bayhaqi (2/305), and by Ibn Hibban as well, via Abu Dawud al-Hafari, from Hafs ibn Ghiyath, from Humayd, from Abdullah ibn Shuqayq, from Aisha, who said: “I saw the Prophet pray while sitting cross-legged.” Al-Hakim judged it “sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi concurred, but both erred, for it only satisfies Muslim’s criteria: al-Bukhari did not transmit anything from Abu Dawud al-Hafari—his name being spelled with the unpointed h and an f. Al-Nasa’i critiqued the hadith, saying: “I know of no one who transmitted this hadith except Abu Dawud, and he is trustworthy, yet I do not think the hadith is anything but a mistake. Allah knows best.” Ibn Hajar remarks in al-Talkhis (3/287): “Ibn Khuzayma also recorded it (1/107/2 = 2/89/978), and al-Bayhaqi transmitted it through Muhammad ibn Saʿid al-Asbahani in support of Abu Dawud; thus it is clear that the report is not mistaken.” _________ (*) In the printed edition of al-Sifah (p. 80) the shaykh also attributes the hadith to Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi in al-Sunan (80/1).
