It also has another chain with the wording: “Why do I see you raising your hands as though they were the tails of unruly horses? Keep still in the prayer.” Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tahawi (1/265), al-Tayalisi (106), Ahmad (5/93), and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir transmit it from Tamim ibn Tarafah, from Jabir.
As for the phrase “then he gives salam to his brother,” al-Nawawi explains that “brother” is generic, meaning one’s fellow worshippers to the right and left. The report therefore indicates that the worshipper should intend, with his concluding salam (salutation of peace), the brothers praying alongside him.
An explicit command to that effect occurs in a hadith of disputed authenticity, narrated by Qatadah from al-Hasan, from Samurah ibn Jundub: “The Messenger of Allah commanded us to greet our leaders with salam and for each of us to greet one another”—one version adds: “in the prayer.” It is recorded by Abu Dawud (1/158), Ibn Majah (1/296), al-Daraqutni (138), al-Hakim (1/270), and al-Bayhaqi (2/181) through Sa id ibn Bashir and Hammam, both from Qatadah.
Al-Hakim declared its chain sound, and al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Nawawi states in al-Majmu (3/480): “The isnads of the two versions in al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi are hasan; the multiple routes support one another so that the hadith is hasan or sahih.” Ibn Hajar adds (3/523): “Al-Bazzar also reports it, adding the words ‘in the prayer’, and its chain is hasan.”
