For the reply to them, see pp. 613–615. (1) The report comes on the authority of Jabir ibn Samura, who said: “I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we ended the prayer we would wave with our hands and say, ‘al-salam ʿalaykum.’ The Messenger of Allah looked at us and said …” – and he mentioned the rest of the wording. Muslim (2/30), al-Nasaʾi (1/195), al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, and al-Bayhaqi (2/181) record it through ʿUbayd Allah ibn Musa, from Israʾil, from Furat al-Qazzaz, from ʿUbayd Allah – that is, Ibn al-Qutayfiya – from him. The additional wording belongs to al-Tabarani. The alternative version is likewise in Muslim, as well as in Abu ʿAwana (2/238–239), al-Bukhari in Rafʿ al-Yadayn (no. 13), al-Nasaʾi (p. 194), Abu Dawud (1/158), al-Tahawi (1/158), Ibn Khuzayma (1/361/733), al-Bayhaqi (2/178, 180), Ahmad (5/86, 88), and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, all of them transmitting it from Misʿar, from ʿUbayd Allah Ibn al-Qutayfiya. _________ (*) The late shaykh’s autograph has the name spelled this way in both places, but the correct form is al-Qibtiyya, as in Tahdhib, Taqrib, Muslim, Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud (no. 916), the Musnad, Abu ʿAwana, and others. (**) In the printed edition of al-Sifah the shaykh also attributed the report to al-Siraj and Abu ʿAwana; it is indeed found in Abu ʿAwana’s Musnad (2/239–240) through several chains from Furat al-Qazzaz, who likewise preserves the extra wording in the second narration.
