Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and they used to motion with their hands when they concluded the prayer, turning to the right and to the left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw this and said, “What is the matter with you, waving your hands as though they were the tails of restive horses? (1) When one of you pronounces the salām—”

I add: He was not the lone transmitter of this report; Bakiyy ibn Mukhallad also cited it in his Musnad through ʿAsim, from Hisham ibn ʿUrwa, with an isnad raised to the Prophet. al-Hafiz (3:522) remarks: “In my judgement this ʿAsim is Ibn ʿUmar, and he is weak; the one who claimed he is Ibn Sulayman al-Ahwal was mistaken. Allah knows best.” Another scholar held that the sound version of the narration is mawquf: al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi record, through several routes from ʿUbayd Allah, from al-Qasim, from her, that she would give a single taslima in the prayer, facing straight ahead, saying: “al-salam ʿalaykum.” I reply: this is merely an alternative chain and there is no contradiction between them. ʿAisha related the Prophet’s practice just as others did, and she herself acted on what she reported—exactly as we saw from Anas. al-Bayhaqi comments: “It is also narrated from a group of Companions that they ended the prayer with one taslima. This falls under the category of permissible variation and restricting oneself to what is allowed. Allah grants success.” The report has further supporting narrations, among them the hadith of Anas with a sound chain, which I have documented in al-Ahadith al-Sahihah (no. 316) and in Irwaʾ under hadith (no. 327). (1) The word may be read with the mim silent or with a damma; it denotes a horse that never stands still but keeps tossing and moving its tail and legs. The prohibited “raising” refers to their lifting their hands at the salam, gesturing to both sides, as explained in Sharh Muslim. Some Hanafis extended the ruling to every instance of raising, including the movements between postures. (*) The full documentation has already been given on p. 1029.
