a little.’ (1)
“ʿAisha reported that he would conclude the prayer with a single taslima that awakened them, and she did not deny the existence of a second.” Such is Ibn al-Qayyim’s statement. Al-Zurqani, however, refuted it in Sharh al-Mawahib (7:336), saying: “This argument would hold only if ʿAisha had made the act of waking them the very reason for limiting it to one; rather, she made it the reason for raising the voice. Her wording therefore plainly indicates sufficing with a single taslima, for she portrayed it as a description of his concluding salutation, removing any possibility of figurative interpretation. Hence it is a decisive text for singleness.”
The hadith has another chain from ʿAisha, as follows:
(1) Another report from ʿAisha states: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to end the prayer with one taslima, facing straight ahead …” and so forth.
It is related by al-Tirmidhi (2:90–91), Ibn Khuzayma (1:360/-no. 729), al-Darqutni (137), al-Hakim (1:230–31), and, through al-Hakim, by al-Bayhaqi (2:179), all via ʿAmr b. Abi Salama al-Tinnisi from Zuhayr b. Muhammad, from Hisham b. ʿUrwa, from his father, from her. The additional wording is found only in al-Bayhaqi. Al-Darqutni notes the variant “qalilan (slightly)” in place of “shayʾan (something),” and al-Hakim reconciles the two versions.
Al-Tahawi (1:159) transmits the same chain without the phrase “facing straight ahead …,” while Ibn Majah (1:291) records it through ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muhammad al-Sanʿani: “Zuhayr b. Muhammad narrated to us …” up to the words “facing straight ahead.” Al-Hakim ruled: “Sound according to the criteria of the Two Shaykhs,” a verdict endorsed by al-Dhahabi and Ibn al-Mulqin (29/1).
Yet some scholars criticized the report because of this very Zuhayr b. Muhammad, remarking: “Although he is listed among the transmitters of the two Sahihs, he has some objectionable narrations, and this hadith is one of them.”
