It was recorded by al-Bazzar, and by al-Tabarani in both the Muʿjam al-Kabir and the Muʿjam al-Awsat, with the wording that only one salam (taslima) is given. All the transmitters belong to the ranks of the Sahih. Al-Maqdisi writes: “Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated it from Humayd except ʿAbd al-Wahhab; al-Hajabi alone reported it. I (al-Maqdisi) add: it was also transmitted by Abu Khalid al-Ahmar from Humayd, from Anas, that he used to conclude with a single salam.” I would add that the marfuʿ version is strengthened by another route cited by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, as found in al-Zad (1:94); his exact words are: “As for the report of Anas, it comes only through Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani from Anas, and, according to them, Ayyub did not hear anything directly from Anas.” It seems he was unaware of this transmission of Humayd from Anas. There are further reports on the same topic: from Samura b. Jundub, recorded by al-Bayhaqi; from Salama b. al-Akwaʿ, likewise in al-Bayhaqi and in Ibn Majah (1:296); and from Sahl b. Saʿd al-Saʿidi, also in al-Bayhaqi. Their chains are weak, yet some may lend support to the others. There is also a narration from ʿAisha, cited next: (1) It is related from ʿAisha by Zurara b. Awfa, who said: “I asked ʿAisha about the night prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. She replied: He would perform the ʿisha prayer, then pray two rakʿas afterward, then sleep. When he awoke and found his water for wuduʾ covered and his miswak beside him, he would use the miswak, perform wuduʾ, stand, and pray eight rakʿas, reciting in each the Opening of the Book (surat al-Fatiha) and whatever he wished of the Quran—on one occasion she said: whatever Allah willed of the Quran—and he would not sit during any of them (for tashahhud).”
