At times, he would add to the first taslīm: “wa barakātuh (and His blessings).” (1)
Ahmad likewise (1/444) records, in abridged form through Abu Maʿmar, that a certain amir in Mecca used to conclude the prayer with two taslims (salutations). ʿAbd Allah (Ibn Masʿud) remarked, “Where did he pick that up (*)? The Messenger of Allah used to do it.”
The hadiths establishing the two taslims are numerous and mutawatir (mass-transmitted). Al-Tahawi listed them with their full chains, while al-Zaylaʿi gathered them in Nasb al-Raya (1/432–434) and Ibn Hajar al-ʿAsqalani in al-Talkhis (3/522–523); the reader may consult those works.
(1) Ibn Hajar (3/523) notes: “This additional wording appears in Sahih Ibn Hibban on the authority of Ibn Masʿud; it is also found in Ibn Majah, and in Abu Dawud within the hadith of Waʾil ibn Hujr. One therefore wonders at Ibn al-Salah’s claim that the addition occurs in none of the hadith collections!”
I add: Al-Tayalisi likewise transmitted the report of Ibn Masʿud; in his Musnad (p. 37) he states: Hammam narrated from ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-Aswad, from his father, from ʿAbd Allah (Ibn Masʿud) that he would give salam to his right with the words: “as-salamu ʿalaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,” and to his left with: “as-salamu ʿalaykum wa rahmatullah.” This is mawquf (stopped at the Companion) and is sound, provided that Hammam heard it from ʿAtaʾ before the latter’s memory decline.
(*) I.e., “From where did he learn it? Where did he get it?” (see al-Nihaya).
