Standing and Sitting in the Night Prayer
(1) “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would spend a long portion of the night praying while standing and another long portion while sitting. When he recited standing, he would bow from the standing position, and when he recited sitting, he would bow from the sitting position.”
(2) “At times he prayed seated: he would recite while sitting, and when roughly thirty or forty verses remained he would rise, recite them standing, then bow and prostrate. In the second rak‘ah he would do the same.”
(1) Related by Muslim (2/162–163); Abu Dawud (1/151); al-Nasaʾi (1/244); al-Tirmidhi (2/203); Ibn Majah (1/370); Ibn Nasr in Qiyam al-Layl (pp. 81, 84); al-Tahawi (1/200); al-Bayhaqi (2/486); likewise by al-Hakim (1/286, 315); and by Ahmad (6/98, 100, 112, 113, 166, 204, 227, 236, 241, 262) through several chains from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shiqiq al-ʿUqayli, who said:
“I asked ʿAʾisha about the Prophet’s night prayer. She answered: ‘He would spend a long portion of the night praying while standing and a long portion while sitting. When he recited while standing he bowed from the standing position, and when he recited while sitting he bowed from the sitting position.’ In another wording, the verb ‘prayed’ appears in place of ‘recited.’
Al-Hakim claimed that the report is found in both Sahihs, but this is a mistake: it is not in al-Bukhari, and ʿAbd Allah ibn Shiqiq is not among al-Bukhari’s narrators. A detailed discussion will follow, showing that this narration does not contradict the one that comes after it; rather, the Prophet alternated between the two practices, as maintained by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar following his teacher al-Hafiz al-ʿIraqi. Their position is quoted by al-Shawkani in Nayl al-Awtar (3/70–71); consult it if you wish.
(2) Related by Malik in the Muwattaʾ (1/157) from ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Madani and from Abu al-Nadr, from Abu Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman, from ʿAʾisha, the Prophet’s wife: —
