And among the last supplications he would say between the tashahhud and the taslīm was:
10- “O Allah, forgive me my former and my latter sins, what I have kept hidden and what I have made public, my excesses, and whatever You know about me better than I do. You are the One who brings forward and the One who defers; there is no deity but You.”
Thus, the matter is unanimously agreed upon among our scholars. Why, then, do those who claim to follow the Hanafi school today hurl every sort of label at anyone who adopts this sound position—one that accords with the Quran, the Sunnah, and the practice of the pious predecessors? Allah the Almighty has indeed spoken the truth: “And whoever is not granted light by Allah will have no light.” (1)
(10) The hadith under discussion is narrated by Ali. Its complete wording has already been cited under the section on opening supplications (duʿa no. 2). It is recorded with this wording by Muslim, 2/185; Abu ʿAwana, 2/101, 168, 235; al-Tirmidhi, 2/250–251 (Bulaq edition), who declared it authentic; and by al-Bayhaqi, 2/32, with the wording: “Among the last things he would say between the tashahhud and the taslim was …,” and they reproduced it. Another version—found in these and other sources—states: “When he had given the salam he would say …,” and it has already been quoted earlier. On the surface this wording conflicts with the first version, but Ibn Hajar reconciles them by interpreting the latter report as referring to the moment of intending to give the salam, since both routes share the same chain of transmission.
(1) On this subject consult Ibn Taymiyya’s fine treatise al-Tawassul wa-l-Wasila, unrivalled in its field. See also my booklet al-Tawassul: Its Types and Rulings, which is likewise important for both its content and style and includes rebuttals to several new objections raised by some contemporary academics. May Allah guide them and us all.
