as well as al-Hakim (1/504) and Ahmad (5/349–350, 360), through the chain of Malik ibn Mighwal—Abd Allah ibn Buraydah—from his father:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard a man saying, “O Allah, I ask You because I bear witness that You are Allah; there is no deity but You, the One, the Ever-Besought, who neither begets nor is begotten, and to whom none is comparable.”
He said, “He has asked Allah by His Supreme Name: when He is asked by it, He gives, and when He is invoked by it, He answers.”
Al-Hakim declared the chain “sound according to the criteria of the two shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi agreed; this judgment is correct. Al-Tirmidhi, however, limited himself to grading it hasan, which is insufficient—perhaps on account of one of its transmitters.
Ibn Hibban also included it in his Sahih. Al-Munziri (2/274) quotes our teacher, the hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan al-Maqdisi: “Its isnad is beyond criticism; no hadith in this chapter possesses a stronger chain.”
Al-Hakim further narrated it via Sharik—Abu Ishaq—from Ibn Buraydah with similar wording and said, “Sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” an unusual claim.
Al-Tahawi likewise recorded it in Sharh Mushkil al-Athar (1/61) through him, combining the routes of Abu Ishaq and Malik ibn Mighwal.
