- He heard a man saying in his tashahhud:
“O Allah! I ask You, O Allah (1)—and in another narration: by Allah—al-Wāḥid, al-Aḥad, al-Ṣamad, who neither begets nor is begotten and to whom none is comparable, to forgive me my sins; indeed, You are the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He has been forgiven, he has been forgiven, he has been forgiven.”
and “dandana” refers to speaking in a low murmur whose tone is heard while the words are not understood. The pronoun in “hawlaha” (“around it”) points back to the statement itself, meaning: “our words are close to yours.”
(8) This wording comes from the hadith of Mihjan ibn al-Adra‘: the Messenger of Allah entered the mosque and found a man who had finished his prayer, was sitting in the tashahhud, and saying …, and so on. It was transmitted by Abu Dawud (1/156), al-Nasaʾi (1/191), al-Hakim (1/267), Ahmad (4/338), and Ibn Khuzaymah (1/358/724) through the chain: ʿAbd al-Warith ibn Saʿid – Husayn al-Muʿallim – ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah – Hanzalah ibn ʿAli – [Mihjan]. Al-Hakim ruled the isnad “sahih according to the criteria of the two shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi agreed. I add: Hanzalah ibn ʿAli is not cited by al-Bukhari in his Sahih, only in al-Adab al-Mufrad; therefore the chain actually meets Muslim’s standard alone. The extra phrasing appears in al-Nasaʾi, Ahmad, and Ibn Khuzaymah. Abu Dawud (1/234), al-Tirmidhi (2/260, Bulaq ed.), and Ibn Majah (2/436) also record it …
(1) This is the wording of Abu Dawud and Ahmad, which begins with the vocative particle “ya.” The other versions read “bi‐Allah,” using the preposition bi-.
