This being so, the first two additional phrases are found in all the sources except al-Tayalisi. The third addition appears in his version as well as in Ahmad’s. The fourth and fifth occur in all the collections except that of Ibn Majah. The sixth is reported by the rest, apart from al-Bukhari. The final addition is unique to al-Tayalisi. The remaining two narratives are those of Ibn Majah and Ahmad. (7) The report is traced back to one of the Prophet’s Companions. It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/127) and Ahmad (3/474) through the chain: Zaidah – Sulayman – Abu Salih – [the Companion], who said: “The Prophet said to a man …” and so on. Ibn Majah (1/294; 2/434) and Ibn Khuzaymah (1/87/1 = 1/358/725) also transmitted it via Jarir from al-Aʿmash—that is, Sulayman—from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah with the same wording. This isnad is sound; its transmitters are trustworthy, as noted in al-Zawaid, and al-Nawawi likewise declared it sahih in al-Majmuʿ (3/471). It meets the criteria of the two shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim). (1) All the consonants are read with the short “a” (fat-ha) except the first nun, which is quiescent; the word therefore means “your concealed request” or “your barely audible speech.”
