and I ask You for bliss that never fades (1), for an unfailing joy of the eye that neither diminishes nor comes to an end; I ask You for contentment after the decree, for the cool ease of life after death, for the delight of gazing upon Your Face, and for yearning to meet You—free of any hurtful hardship or misleading temptation. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are themselves rightly guided.
Al-Nasa’i and Ahmad (4/264) also transmitted it through another line: Sharik → Abu Hashim al-Wasiti → Abu Mijlaz—al-Nasa’i adds: from Qays ibn Ubad—who said, “Ammar ibn Yasir led the prayer…,” and he cited the supplication with almost the same wording. This isnad is hasan (sound).
The other version is that of Ibn Nasr and al-Hakim; the first and last of the extra phrases are found only in Ibn Khuzayma, while the middle and last occur in al-Hakim.
(1) Al-Nasa’i’s wording is yanfadu (“comes to an end”).
The correct reading is that of the majority, and it is confirmed by what appears in the Musnad (1/437) via Shubah → Abu Ishaq → Abu Ubaydah → Abd Allah [ibn Masud], who said:
“The Messenger of Allah passed by me while I was praying and said, ‘Ask, and it will be granted to you, O son of Umm Abd.’ ʿUmar related: I and Abu Bakr rushed forward, but Abu Bakr reached him first—indeed, whenever we competed in a good deed he would beat me to it—and he said: ‘Among the supplications I hardly ever omit is:
O Allah, I ask You for a bliss that never vanishes, an eye-delight that never ceases, and the companionship of the Prophet Muhammad in the highest reaches of Paradise, the Everlasting Garden.’
