Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

Supplications before the closing salām and their varieties
......................................... (*)
In his prayer (1), the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—would offer a range of invocations, sometimes using this one and at other times that one. He also approved other supplications, and “he instructed the worshipper to select from them whatever he wishes” (2). Here they are:

* In the suppressed portion of the original manuscript the author had written: He would sometimes add: “The best speech is Allah’s speech, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ.” Shaykh al-Albani traced this wording to the hadith of Jabir: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say in his prayer, after the tashahhud…,” and cited it in full. It is recorded by al-Nasaʾi (1/193) through the chain Jaʿfar b. Muhammad → his father → Jabir, a sanad that meets Muslim’s criteria for authenticity. We noticed that the Shaykh omitted it from the printed edition of Sifat al-Salah, very likely because he later concluded that the Prophet ﷺ restricted this formula to the Friday sermon. Allah knows best. See his remarks on hadith no. 956 in Mishkat (1/301). For the reader’s benefit we have placed it here in the margin. (1) The sources do not specify a single spot in the prayer for these supplications; they may be recited wherever duʿa is appropriate, such as in sujud or after the tashahhud—both positions in which the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers to supplicate, as noted above. Cf. Fath al-Bari (2/253). (2) Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Athram said: “I asked Ahmad, ‘With what should I supplicate after the tashahhud?’ He replied, ‘With whatever has been transmitted in the report.’” * For the full documentation of the hadith see pp. 893–894 above.
