Imam Ibn Ḥazm states in Marātib al-Ijmāʿ: “The scholars are unanimously agreed that shaving the entire beard is an act of mutilation, and it is not permissible.”
If some scholars have classified excessive shortening of the beard as mutilation, and others have judged the complete removal of the moustache with a razor to be mutilation, then what must be said about removing the whole beard?
The face is a noble part of the body, the locus of beauty and the senses. It therefore deserves honor and protection, not mutilation and degradation. This is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught when he said, “If one of you strikes his brother, let him avoid the face,” and in another wording, “Let him never strike the face.” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Suwayd ibn Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him) once saw a man slap his servant and said, “Do you not know that the face is sacrosanct?” Reported by Muslim.
How astonishing are the people of our time: they congratulate the man who disfigures his own features by shaving his beard, saying to him, “Naʿīman!” (May it be pleasant!).
