Letting the beard grow is a sign of manliness and virility.
Allah, exalted is He, created the male and the female, and He made the growth of hair a trait they share in several places—with the exception of the beard and moustache. By these two features He distinguished the man from the woman. Indeed, for a man to wear women’s clothing is a lesser transgression than for him to shave his beard in imitation of them, for the beard is the obvious, unmistakable mark that visibly sets a man apart from a woman (1). Allah has ordained for each sex the type of adornment that suits its innate nature.
Thus, the Sacred Law permits women to beautify themselves with gold and silk, and has forbidden them to
(1) It is medically established that beard growth on a man’s face is an effect of the male hormone testosterone. Illnesses that reduce masculinity (demasculinization) are often accompanied by the loss of beard hair. Conversely, injecting this hormone into a woman causes a decline in femininity (defeminization) and the appearance of virilizing or masculinizing traits. The clearest of these traits is hirsutism—excessive hair growth in areas that are normally hairless, such as the beard and moustache region.
إعفاء اللحية رجولة وفحولة
خلق الله ﷿ الذكر والأنثى، وجعل وجود الشعر سمة مشتركة بينهما فى مواضع ليس منها: اللحية والشارب، فإنه ميَّز بهما الرجل عن المرأة، ولَأن يلبس الرجل ملابس المرأة أخف من أن يحلق لحيته تشبهًا بها، لأن لحية الرجل هى الفارق الظاهر، والمميز الواضح بين الرجل والمرأة (١)، وقد شرع الله لكل من الزينة ما يناسب فطرته.
وأباح الشرع للنساء التزين بالذهب والحرير، وحرمهما على
(١) ومن المعلوم طبيَّا أن نمو اللحية فى وجه الرجل أثر من آثار هرمون الذكورة ( Testosterone)، وأن الأمراض التى تطرأ على بعض المرضى، وينشأ عنها نقص فى الرجولة ( Demasculinization) تكون مصحوبة لسقوط شعر اللحية من الوجه، وأن هذا الهرمون لو حُقن في أنثى فإنه يؤدى إلى اضمحلال الأنوثة ( Defeminization) وظهور أعراض الاسترجال ( Virilization) أو التذكير ( Masulinization)، ومن أوضح هذه الأعراض: الشَّعْرانية ( hirsutism) أي كثرة نمو الشعر فى مناطق لم تكن مشعرة كاللحية والشارب.
