and they exclaimed, “This man will not leave anything of our way without opposing us in it.” [Muslim]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said, “…and whoever imitates a people is counted among them.” [Sound]
Al-Hasan observed, “Hardly does a man imitate a people without eventually joining them”—in both this world and the Hereafter.
Some elders of the Anṣār said, “O Messenger of Allah, the People of the Book trim their beards and grow out their moustaches.” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Trim your moustaches, leave your beards full, and differ from the People of the Book.” [Hasan]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said, “Oppose the polytheists: cut the moustaches short and let the beards grow.” (1) Agreed upon.
(1) It should be noted that the mushrikun (polytheists) living in the Prophet’s time ﷺ all wore beards; see Sahih Muslim, hadith no. 1800. The Arabs likewise regarded the beard as an adornment both in the jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period) and in Islam, and the Prophet sanctioned this practice—perhaps it had been inherited from the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham). Western Europeans also kept their beards until Tsar Peter of Russia promoted shaving at the start of the seventeenth century; from Europe this blameworthy custom later spread among some Muslims.
الخاصة بهم، فقالوا: " مَا يُرِيدُ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ أَنْ يَدَعَ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا إِلَّا خَالَفَنَا فِيهِ" [رواه مسلم].
وقال ﷺ " .. وَمَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ" [صحيح]
وعن الحسن قال: "قلما تشبه رجل بقوم إلا لحق بهم" يعنى فى الدنيا والآخرة.
وقال بعض مشيخة الأنصار: "يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ يَقُصُّونَ عَثَانِينَهُمْ -أي لحاهم- وَيُوَفِّرُونَ سِبَالَهُمْ. -أي شواربهم- قَالَ: فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " قُصُّوا سِبَالَكُمْ وَوَفِّرُوا عَثَانِينَكُمْ وَخَالِفُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ" [حسن]
وقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «خَالِفُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ، وَأَوْفُوا اللِّحَى» (١) متفق عليه،
(١) ومما ينبغى التنبه إليه أن المشركين الموجودين فى زمن النبى ﷺ كانوا ذوى لحى "انظر صحيح مسلم الحديث (١٨٠٠) "، لأن العرب لم تترك زينة اللحى لا في الجاهلية ولا فى الإسلام، وقد أقرهم الإسلام عليها، ولعلهم توارثوها من دين إبراهيم ﵇، وكان الغربيون يعفون لحاهم إلى أن أشاع الملك بطرس ملك روسيا حلق اللحية فى أوربا فى أول القرن السابع عشر، ومنهم تسربت إلى المسلمين هده السنة السيئة فيما بعد. =
