And it is authentically reported from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) that he explained the “words” with which Abraham was tried as the traits of the fiṭrah (primordial disposition).
The Noble Quran likewise shows that Aaron wore his beard in its natural fullness. Allah, exalted is He, recounts Aaron’s plea to Moses: “Son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard nor by my head…” (Ṭā Hā 20:94). Had he been clean-shaven, his brother would not have reached for his beard at all.
After mentioning several of the noble messengers, among them Abraham and Aaron, Allah says: “Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance.” (al-Anʿām 6:90). He thus commanded our Prophet ﷺ to emulate them, and that command applies equally to us, for whatever is enjoined upon the exemplar is, by extension, enjoined upon his followers. Allah also says: “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example.” (al-Aḥzāb 33:21).
Letting the beard grow is therefore the way of the believers. Allah says: “You are the best community ever raised for mankind…” (Āl ʿImrān 3:110).
