Al-Humaydi narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us; Mansur informed us, from Mujahid, from Abu Maʿmar, from ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“Two men from Thaqif and one from Quraysh—or two from Quraysh and one from Thaqif—gathered inside the Kaʿbah. Their bellies were laden with fat, yet the understanding in their hearts was scant. One of them said, ‘Do you think Allah hears what we are saying?’ The second replied, ‘He hears us if we speak aloud, but He does not hear if we keep our voices low.’ The third remarked, ‘If He can hear us when we raise our voices, then He can certainly hear us when we whisper.’ Thereupon Allah, Exalted is He, revealed: “You did not try to hide yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins should bear witness against you” ⦗Fussilat 41:22⦘.
