Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us; Sufyan transmitted to us; from Mansur; from al-Aʿmash; from Abu Ḍuḥā; from Masrūq, who said: “I visited Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him). He cited this report and reflected on the Prophet’s ﷺ words: ‘O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know. And when you see greed obeyed, whims followed, the world preferred, and every opinionated person enamoured of his own view, then concern yourself with your own soul and leave the masses to their affair.’ ⦗64⦘
Abdān also related it to us from ʿAbd Allah. [Utbah ibn Abī Ḥakīm says:] ʿAmr ibn Jāriyah al-Lakhmī told me; Abū Umayyah al-Shaʿbānī told me; he said: “I went to Abū Thaʿlabah, and he said: The Prophet ﷺ declared, ‘When you see greed obeyed…,’” and the wording is similar.
