ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Juʿfī narrated to us; Abū Ḥafṣ al-Tinnīsī narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to us; Hilāl ibn Abī Maymūna told me; ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār told me; Muʿāwiya ibn al-Ḥakam (may Allah be pleased with him) told me:
I said, “Messenger of Allah, we were only recently steeped in the age of ignorance, then Allah brought us Islam. While I was praying with the Prophet ﷺ, a man in the congregation sneezed, so I said, ‘May Allah have mercy on you.’ When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer he called me and said, ‘In this prayer of ours nothing of ordinary human speech is appropriate; it is comprised solely of tasbīḥ (glorifying Allah), takbīr (proclaiming His greatness), and the recitation of the Quran.’”
