Muhammad ibn Salam narrated to us; Jareer reported, on the authority of Abu Farwah, from Abu Zur‘ah, from Abu Dharr and Abu Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with them—who said:
A man came forward and said, “Peace be upon you, O Muhammad.” The Prophet returned the greeting, whereupon the man asked, “O Muhammad, what is faith?” He replied, “Faith is to believe in Allah, the angels, the Book, the Prophet, and to believe in destiny in its entirety.”
The man said, “If I do that, have I become a believer?” He answered, “Yes.”
