Abu ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl said: “I heard ʿUbayd Allah ibn Saʿīd say, ‘I heard Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd say: I have continually heard our companions declare, “The deeds of the servants are created.”’”

Abu ʿAbd Allah added: “Their movements, their voices, their acquisitions, and their writings are created. As for the Qur’an that is recited, elucidated, and fixed in the muṣḥaf—inscribed, written, and stored within hearts—it is the speech of Allah and is not created. Allah says, ‘No indeed! It is but clear verses lodged in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge’ (al-ʿAnkabūt 49).”

Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm said: “As for the receptacles themselves, who could possibly doubt that they are created?” Allah the Exalted says, ‘By a written Book in an unrolled parchment’ (aṭ-Ṭūr 3), and He says, ‘But this is a glorious Qur’an, (inscribed) in a Preserved Tablet’ (al-Burūj 21)—thus He mentions that it is safeguarded and recorded. He also says, ‘and what they inscribe’ (al-Qalam 1).
